Mr. Walters’ Classroom Rules and Expectations for American History A
Respect is the single most important thing that I expect from students. I will always treat you with respect, and I expect it in return. This means:
· When you are asked to do something, you comply. If you have a problem, see me after class. I will always be willing to talk with you.
· Respect your fellow classmates.
· Detentions will be issued for actions deemed “disrespectful” and phone calls to home will follow.
Specific rules of this classroom.
1. I expect you to be in your seat and quiet when the bell rings.
2. You will be allowed to leave the room 6 times during the semester. You will initial my seating chart when you leave. After your 6 times are up, you will not leave the room.
a. You will ONLY leave the room after I have signed your handbook.
b. If you must leave after your 5 are used, a tardy will be issued.
3. Water is the only drink/food item allowed in the room. No colored drinks, no food.
4. You are not permitted to put your head down at any time. One warning, then detentions will follow. Sleeping will result in a detention.
5. Do not throw or leave any type of garbage on my floors. You will sweep my room after school.
6. Failure to bring textbook and/or writing utensil to class on a consistent basis will result in a detention.
7. Cell Phones, IPods, etc will be confiscated immediately if seen in use.
Homework/Late Assignments.
1. Homework is to be completed and turned in prior to the start of class. Place in the black tray at the back of the room.
2. Assignments will be accepted 1 day late, however they will be for half credit only (assuming the work is correct)
3. If you are absent/missed class, I will not seek you out to get you the missed work. YOU MUST COME SEE ME AND GET IT. I will enter a zero in the grade book if you fail to get the assignment.
4. If you are absent the day before the test, you will still be required to take the test immediately upon your return. If you miss the day of the test, you will take the test immediately upon your return.
PARTICIPATE IN CLASS!!!! The more you get involved with class discussion, the better it will be. I am open to new ideas, so let me know what will help you learn.
How we Operate:
1. There will be 6 tests given in the semester, not including your final comprehensive exam.
2. There will be 6 large quizzes in the trimester.
a. Tests and quizzes will be announced at least 1 week in advance.
3. Tests account for roughly 70% of your total grade, everything else accounts for the remaining 30%.
4. You will take notes at least 2 to 3 times a week in this class. You will keep these in a binder or folder.
5. A 3-ring Binder will be kept for this class. A running list of what you will need in the Binder will appear on the right side of the dry-erase board all trimester.
a. The Binder will be collected and graded every 2 to 3 weeks at the time of your test.
6. We will also take breaks from the schedule to discuss current events, on which assignments may be given.
Why do we need to learn boring old history anyway? Here is the deal:
1. America is an exceptional country unlike any other nation on earth.
2. Why are we so exceptional? How did we become the most free and powerful nation on the planet?
-You owe it to yourself to learn and honor the sacrifices of your ancestors.
3. I get bored with names and dates, so we will not focus on such things. Instead, we are looking to understand relationships and how one thing led to another in our nation’s history.
4. American History is Stories. Put your listening ears on and relax.
5. Homework will not be given often. This means that your time in class is extremely valuable, so take advantage of it.
